Making it easier to stamp out fake CBT certificates.
Fake CBTs in circulation has been an ever growing problem in the UK and especially in London, this has grown in conjunction with the growth of the delivery rider industry.
There are social media outlets that offer CBT certificates for sale. These are generally worthless paper versions produced by scanning a real image and using image editing software to manipulate the details.
They are very easy to spot and it does not take much for the authorities to identify a counterfeit CBT. Some counterfeiters are offering this "service" for £300 a sheet.
Certainly this is very lucrative for the scammer but the question arises why would someone pay as much as that for a fake one when a genuine one backed up with excellent training can be obtained for approximately half the cost! Our CBT courses begin at just £155!
The simple answer is that for some delivery riders language can be a barrier to taking the CBT course. For others it is that they are not legally permitted to work in the UK so there is an inclination to resort to the counterfeit documents.
Unfortunately we cannot help those in the latter category but we can help those in the former as we can provide the CBT training course in several languages, namely Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Galician.
The issue of fake CBT certificates is a big deal because they are a danger to the public. Someone riding with a fake certificate is likely to have had no training and is highly likely to have no insurance. Up until recently the Metropolitan Police were happy to accept sight of an image of a CBT certificate at a roadside check but as the fake CBT problem has grown in recent years this is no longer the case.
The DVSA's policy (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) has always been that he only proof of holding a valid certificate is being in possession of the document itself. What has changed has been the Police's approach. A rider stopped in London today and failing to provide a valid CBT certificate at the roadside is likely to have the bike or scooter seized. Depending on the nature of the offence being committed they may also be arrested and Courts could even impose a custodial sentence.
By making it easier for new delivery riders to get on the road and working legally rather than resorting to illegal means we hope, in partnership with Ride Today London, to begin to erode the fake CBT problem and have a positive effect on driving standards and road safety as a whole.
